We are now hiring a Director of Development at Shadowbox Live in Columbus Ohio.

Do you thrive in a creative environment working with like-minded people? Shadowbox Live could be the place for you! Shadowbox Live, the nation’s largest resident theater ensemble, is seeking a Director of Development in Columbus, OH.

The successful candidate will have the drive, passion, and ability to secure contributed monetary support for one of the region’s most acclaimed arts organizations. The Director of Development is responsible for evaluating and nurturing the organization's support base, soliciting gifts, and managing systems for donor tracking. This key staff member will work closely with the CEO, the Board of Trustees, and the Management Team to support and enhance relationships developed in support of SBX Live. The annual operating budget for Shadowbox is approximately $3.4 million, of which 35 percent is raised through the contributions of private donors, corporations, and grants. 

Reports to: CEO

Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan and oversee donor development operations; develop and maintain high-level relationships with Board members, donors, and key stakeholders; and facilitate long-standing relationships between Shadowbox Live’s CEO and major funders.
  • Help plan and direct annual and multiyear comprehensive funding campaigns that maintain and grow support for both ongoing programming and longer-term strategic goals.
  • Help propose and draft compelling stories for grant and donor opportunities that showcase the power of Shadowbox and enrich our community.
  • Support and partner with Board and staff leadership to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors.
  • Report directly to the CEO and supervise the grant manager, donor relations coordinator and contract grant writer. 
  • Work with the CEO and CFO to track, monitor and report on progress toward achieving fundraising goals.
  • Cultivate and steward gifts from individuals by working with the SBX donor relations coordinator to maintain frequent and meaningful contact with current donors and develop relationships with new prospects.
  • Help plan and execute a monthly calendar of stewardship activities, including special stewardship events for segmented donors’ groups.
  • Review, update, and oversee the donor benefits program (VIP events, concierge service, ticket pre-sales, etc.) and ensure the appropriate recognition of donors at all levels.
  • Oversee and coordinate all individual donor development-related aspects of SBX Live’s annual fundraising event: Shadowbox Live 365.
  • Track and monitor the effectiveness and efficiency of each income strategy and adjust as needed to ensure that annual development goals are met.
  • Develop a high level of proficiency in the operations of the software system and maintain, with the highest level of accuracy and efficiency, the donor and prospect database.
  • Work with CEO to identify corporations and businesses for additional engagement through sponsorship's, rentals, events and volunteer opportunities. 
  • Work with the Shadowbox Live operations department to facilitate all donor and development events. 

What we’re looking for:
  • Minimum three years’ experience with a nonprofit organization in a development capacity; arts and/or theatre; events experience preferable.
  • Ability to learn and master the ticketing system (currently Patron Manager-Salesforce, soon to be Cuebox), to navigate a new donor platform (tbd), and to produce and analyze wealth screening reports (e.g., Wealth Engine).
  • Expertise in Excel, Word, and other office management tools.
  • High degree of organization, analytical skills, attention to detail, and an ability to manage multiple projects within required deadlines.
  • A great storyteller and confident communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills and a demonstrated ability to distill complex ideas into clear and compelling documents.
  • A flexible team player and motivated independent worker with a willingness to learn and grow in a fast-paced, creative environment. 
  • A creative thinker with a passion for the arts and for the mission of SBX Live and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including:
  • Ability to collect, organize, analyze, and present donor and program data.
  • Ability to develop rapport, as well as build and maintain relationships with donors, patrons, volunteers, board and staff.
  • A highly collaborative working style and an ability to lead, motivate, and inspire others to support the philanthropic goals of the organization.

Salary range is $50-55K and is commensurate with experience and agreed up on hours.
